The typical patient journey at SPJ

Your SPJ journey begins with a thorough pre-op office visit with your Surgeon and staff. They will discuss your hernia procedure, whether it will be open or laparoscopic, and present you with samples of the mesh for you to examine. They will also schedule you for your hernia procedure at a hospital or surgery center near you.

Your SPJ team will provide everything required to ensure you are completely prepared before your surgery, and that you are ready for a quick recovery when you return home. This level of attentiveness and communication not only promotes clarity and peace of mind, but also promotes the best outcome.

The day of your surgery, your SPJ Surgeon will check to see if you have any additional questions and review the steps of the procedure with you. During the procedure, your choice of SURGIMESH® will be implanted, and after your procedure, the surgical team will make sure you are comfortable as they prepare you for your return home.

Typically, one to two weeks after surgery, your SPJ Surgeon & Staff will see you for a quick post-operative visit… And, to ensure you “Get Back to Your Life Quicker”, you will receive an SPJ Emoji 10-second survey to ensure you are happy, healthy, and completely satisfied with your return to normal activities. These quick surveys will also allow you to share your SPJ experience with future patients so they can “Get back to their lives Quicker” too!

    About the Hernia surgery

Is surgery necessary to repair a hernia?

Answer: It is important to have a hernia surgically repaired. Hernias do not resolve on their own.

What if I don’t repair my hernia?

Answer: If a hernia is left untreated, it may increase in size, become more painful, and lead to much more serious complications. Your SPJ Surgeon will provide additional information on this topic.

    Hernia repair mesh technology

Does it matter which mesh technology is used for hernia repair?

Answer: Yes. Surgeons use various mesh products to repair hernias during surgery. The mesh reinforces the weakened abdominal wall tissue. There are different types and brands of mesh available, and all hernia repair mesh are NOT the same. In fact, the choice of mesh affects the length of recovery time, pain, and risk of recurrence.

What types of hernia mesh do SPJ-Certified Surgeons use?

Answer: Surgical mesh has vastly improved over the years. SPJ Surgeons use the latest, most advanced mesh, which is an innovative, lighter weight mesh. This mesh is formed from non-woven microfibers of polypropylene to create a very flexible, high-strength mesh that integrates into surrounding tissue.

    Recovery

How long is the recovery period typically?

Answer: The recovery period depends on what type of hernia you have, your general health, the type of hernia repair procedure, and your normal healing rate. Often, patients have an outpatient surgery and return home the same day. Based on the type of hernia repair you need, your SPJ Surgeon will provide specific information on recovery timing expectations.

When can I return to normal activities after surgery?

Answer: Your return to normal activities depends on numerous factors. Full recovery from an SPJ hernia surgery may only take 7 days, many other surgeons typically recommend an average of 30 days before returning to full activities including exercise and workouts. Based on the type of hernia repair you need, your SPJ Surgeon will provide more specific information on your recovery and timing for returning to various activities.
